With 50,818 spectators in attendance day eight of the World Equestrian Games featured the second leg of the three-day cross-country event, one of the most dangerous competitions in the games. Of the 79 riders who took the course, 19 of them did not complete it, some for injuries, others for refusing a jump.
The worst injury of the day came when the 73 horse, Iman du Golfe, ridden by Juan Carlos Garcia of Italy (pictured), suffered a deep laceration over the left elbow region at fence 20. Attending veterinarians from Lexington's Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital were optimistic that the horse would make a full recovery.
