For those of you not privy to the Louisville music scene lately, it’s been a scorcher!!  As all of you know, since you follow my articles so religiously, there have been some seriously brilliant acts roll through the Metro Area lately, BUT on top that the heat index has literally been over 100°F.  For my European readers, that’s about 32°F.  Heck, half the country is burning, but enough about the weather as I’m just the music man.

On July 4th, America’s Independence Day, the true fire was on stage at 5/3rd Bank’s Independence Festival at Louisville’s Waterfront Park.  True to local flare, Midnight Star warmed up the stage with all the original members, 2 of which are Louisvillians, blazing classics like ‘Freakazoid’, gold chart topper ‘Midas Touch’, and of course banged out the smash ‘No Parking on the Dance Floor’.  More classics 80s dance jams than a waspy wedding in Newport (Rhode Island that is), as some of the crowd were even surprised they weren’t headlining!  One local ‘festive’ gentleman I talked to said ‘Maaaan, this IS that stuff!!’  He was actually talking about the music, no bath salts involved in this instance so not to worry about my face and despite the actual heat in the air, the crowd didn’t falter a bit.

The main man, as my Negril people liked to tell me they ALL were in ’98, Jimmy Cliff took to the stage after Mayor Greg Fischer’s introduction, and subsequent admittance to attending a 78 concert of Bob Marley’s (no official word on whether he inhaled) solidifying his Reggae ‘street cred’.  To the delight of fans that remained, he brought his own ‘Irie’ making it a most memorable evening for all.  My personal highlight was his version of Rancid’s, but ‘my girl’ (Cliff declared), ‘Ruby Soho’.  Now I spotted all two of you with your Operation Ivy tees on and sure you appreciate it as well, seeing as Tim ‘Lint’ Armstrong produced Cliff’s new album (see previous article).  Regardless the man is still truly a craftsman and artist and I just dream that he brings it back at least ‘One More’ time.
