JJ Grey is a down to Earth musician who loves his home and uses his life experiences as a basis for his music. Both the style and lyrics span musical genres. Musicians who influenced Grey’s ambitions include Lynard Skynard, Otis Redding, and George Jones. Grey uses an array of instruments to accompany the thought provoking lyrics in his songs, including a Gibson SG, a Gibson 337, and a Gibson Southern Jumbo Acoustic. Grey’s harmonica is always within reach-just in case.
Born in the rural area of Jacksonville, Florida, JJ is no stranger to the outdoors and stays true to the working-class values he learned as a child. Many of Grey’s songs rehash stories told by his family or his dealings with friends growing up and learning to live off the land.
JJ partnered with film maker Spookie Daly, a native of Boston, and a big supporter of JJ’s way of life. Brighter Days, “Just kind of happened all at once”, says JJ about the project during an interview with Louisville.com. “There have been so many documentaries I wish I had an album to go along with it. I decided this was a chance to make a live album, a soundtrack, and sing about home”, JJ explains. This album is the perfect avenue for Grey as his strengths as a performer and songwriter coincide with his passion for his home.
Grey is on the road 8 months out of the year, sharing his stories of life in a different time and place. Friday, Mofro will join JJ on stage. Mofro accompanies JJ at every turn; Anthony Cole (drums), Art Edmaiston (saxophone), Anthony Farrell (organ), Dennis Marion (trumpet), Todd Smallie (bass), and Andrew Trube (guitar).
JJ Grey and Mofro will be at Headliners with JC Brooks and Darryl Hance; doors open at 7 pm. Tickets are $17 in advance; $20 day of show and available here: http://headlinerslouisville.com/box-office and at Better Days Records in the Highlands. The show is open to those who can prove they are at least 18 years of age.
