The Kaviar Forge is hosting an interesting exhibit during  the F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop tonight that showcases Kentucky leather artists. The opening exhibit will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Leather in Kentucky holiday exhibit will run through January 17, 2012 and feature artists Sue Schofield of Inherited Leather, Steven Hughes of Pillywiggins Leather Etc, Robert Black of Marlinspike Knot Works, Janet Strait of Swash-Bucklers, Walt Priddy, Johnny Sosbe, and Craig Kaviar.  Since it is a holilday show, the items purchased may be taken home right away instead of waiting until the end of the show. Items include:  masks, jewelry, hats, baskets, belts, purses, and of course saddles.

The gallery will also be playing videos by leather artist Robert Black about knotting and braiding. The goal of the show is to show leatherwork that can be considered a work of art. Their web site says that the type of leather used by participating artists varies from the more common cattle and horse hide to the exotic stingray hide to kangaroo hide, the strongest leather. Braided leather will be on display as well: these intricate techniques are mostly historical and are rooted in sailor’s knots and Argentine designs.

Their web site further says,

"Kaviar Gallery is a fine arts gallery with a hand forged twist. An extension of Kaviar Forge, the gallery pays homage to Kentucky Craft Heritage by showcasing over 30 Kentucky Craft artisans as well as many artists from throughout the United States. In addition to the fine sculpture and ironwork produced at the forge Kaviar Gallery also exhibits ceramics, glass, wood, stone, paintings, fiber arts, and jewelry. Kaviar Forge & Gallery is committed to facilitating support for the artistic community by providing opportunities for new and emerging artists along with well seasoned artists who continue to perfect their craft."

Gallery Hours:  Thursday – Friday 12 to 6 PM and Saturday 12 to 4 PM or by appointment.
