Kentucky Derby 138 horse profile: Went The Day Well [Horse Racing]

Print

Pros: Went The Day Well brings back the connections of Animal Kingdom-- trainer Graham Motion, owner Team Valor International, and jockey John Velazquez. Went The Day Well comes into the Derby much the same as Animal Kingdom, with a win in the Vinery Racing Spiral. In that race, he beat All Squared Away, who came back two weeks later to win Keeneland’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes.

Cons: Went The Day Well really hasn’t beaten anyone. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile has proven to be the key race, as 9 of the 13-horse field have come back to win graded stakes. Went The Day Well was not among that field. Went The Day Well took tons of hype early, but the chatter is starting to hush around him.

Fun Fact: History will be made if Went The Day Well wins the Kentucky Derby. There has never been back-to-back Kentucky Derby winners coming out of a Vinery Racing Spiral victory.

Analysis: There’s too many others to use in this field of talented runners. Although I really respect the connections of Went The Day Well, I’ll have to eliminate him from my wagering. Just too many others that have done more at this point.
