Kings of Leon took the stage last night at the KFC Yum! Center—the third stop on their Mechanical Bull tour.  As the album-title suggests, Mechanical Bull was definitely a wild ride worth taking.

Gary Clark, Jr. – described as the “future of Texas blues”—opened for the band with a set of blues-infused rock ballads, many with an accent on extended guitar solos, including two during “When My Train Pulls In.”  Clark continued to electrify the crowd by throwing back to Lowell Fulson’s 1948 hit “Three O’Clock Blues,” covered in a way that maintained the song’s style, but kept it feeling fresh.

“Is everyone ready to have fun tonight?”  Frontman Caleb Followill called out to the crowd after taking stage. “We are—we’ve got tomorrow off,” he continued.

And Kings of Leon delivered a show that ensured they would need one.

The band provided a varied performance. From moody anthems like ‘Wait for Me,’ to the dark, but stimulating addition of ‘Family Tree,’ the band’s diversity was showcased.

While it was obvious when some of the band’s lesser tracks were being played—the arena came to a dull hum and audience members took the opportunity to explore the Yum! Center, returning to their seats with food, drink and paraphernalia—placing the frisky single ‘Supersoaker ‘right in the middle of the show  immediately regained the crowd’s full attention.

As did the inclusion of the hit “Use Somebody’, from the band’s fourth studio album, Only by the Night.

Almost exactly a decade after their debut Kings Of Leon’s sixth album arrives amid a somewhat rejuvenated sense of interest in the band—and for good reason. Mechanical Bull was a strong and varied stunner for old and new fans alike.
