It's Light Up Louisville on a much smaller scale. The 21st annual tree lighting ceremony at Bellarmine University is a fantastic family-friendly event, and you don't have to worry about finding a parking space, battling a huge crowd, or arriving early to get a good spot. If you're a Bellarmine alum or just happen to be nearby in the Highlands, your tots will certainly have eyes all aglow as they watch the massive tree twinkle with colored lights at 6:00pm.
The event will include Christmas caroling, holiday crafts, and a photos with Santa. After I braved the Santa set-up in various malls across the country for the first few years when my kids were terrified babies, I learned my lesson. You've got to commemorate the season with a Santa photo, but why not do it in a stress-free environment? Finding Santa photo opportunities in non-mall settings is a total score, and they usually cost far less than the insane package deals you are forced to buy from the bored teenager--er, elf--at faux North Pole stations.
And if you're hungry after the tree lighting at 6:00 pm, a Christmas dinner will be served in the Amelia Brown Frazier Hall for $7 per person.
