Lights Under Louisville: spectacular display

Print

My family and I added a new tradition to our ever-growing Christmas list: Lights Under Louisville at Mega Caverns. We took the drive underground last evening and were met with no line (due to the weather and it being a Sunday night perhaps) and a dazzling display like no other we’ve ever seen. I’m constantly reminded of how long I’ve lived in Louisville and still have not experienced all there is to do in this city. Lights Under Louisville can now be checked off the list!

We entered the dark caves and caverns with our car lights turned out, our two children (ages 10 and 2) in tow, and an anticipation for the way our holiday spirits would be lifted after our experience. We were all mesmerized, but frankly no other person in our car could have been more drawn into the awe of this display than our toddler. So many lights! So many familiar favorite things and faces! The highlights for him: the tank, bulldozer, and candy canes. The highlight for my daughter: the waterfall lights that depicted the Falls of the Ohio. I loved the Kentucky Christmas area with the Falls, the Belle of Louisville, the Slugger bats, etc. You’ll drive through a variety of themes, from Kentucky Christmas, to Snowball fights, to a winter wonderland and Santa’s toy shop, to the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa displays too, all the while listening to holiday music blasting off the inner walls of the cavern. What might have really been the neatest thing was reading the signs as we drove under the Louisville Zoo and the Watterson Expressway. We just had an absolute blast! We left the caverns full of that jolly good holiday feeling to carry us through to Christmas.

You will receive a Wendy’s coupon booklet when you enter and you can pick up a $5 off coupon from Wendy’s, $2 of which (ticket price) goes to their adoption fundraiser. From the Lights Under Louisville website:

  • World’s only fully underground drive through Christmas light show
  • Over 2,000,000 points of light
  • Over 850 Christmas light displays

For more information on ticketing, click here. The hours of the show are Monday-Friday 6pm-10pm and Saturday and Sunday 5pm-10pm. It continues nightly through January 1, 2014.
