I stopped by the tech rehearsal for Voices of Kentuckiana as they prepare for their upcoming holiday concert this weekend. If you did not know it ahead of time, you would never guess that this local, all-inclusive chorus is also non-auditioned. Their warm sound immediately puts you in the holiday spirit and gets you thinking of holidays past.
The concert, "Voices of Holidays Past," takes you on a mesmerizing journey through songs they have performed in their 17 seasons. With a set list that includes "Season for Lovers," "Grown Up Christmas List," and "Children, Go Where I Send Thee," there is a great mix of music. "Light One Candle" is a celebration of Chanukah, and "Riu, Riu, Chiu" is a wonderful medieval Spanish chant. "Christmas in About Three Minutes" beautifully melds innumerable holiday carols in, well, about three minutes. There is a tender commissioned piece, "Christmas Memories"; and "Stars" from the Broadway hit Les Miserable spreads the message of the chorus to "change our world through song."
With 18 selections, there is sure to be something for everyone. If you have been to every concert, you will want to hear this collection. If you have never been, this is definitely not one to miss.
The concert will be Saturday, December 17th at 7:30 PM and Sunday, December 18th at 3:00 PM, both at the Ursuline Arts Center. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased online. Tickets at the door will be $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
