Bellarmine University art professor Bob Lockhart will bring more than 25 paintings spanning more than 30 years to the Jewish Community Center’s Patio Gallery, 3600 Dutchmans Lane, for an exhibit beginning this coming Sunday, May 15. A reception at 2 p.m. that day is free and open to the public.

“[The series] is part of my continued interest in how to draw the viewer into both the composition and the story,” says Lockhart, who has taught at Bellarmine for more than 40 years. “I feel strongly that the story is simply something I am compelled to record as the artist and not question in any way except for the delivery. Unquestionably, the story is to be deciphered by the viewer.”

Lockhart’s work—in colored pencil, oil pastels and neo-color on an acid-free matte board—is part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York and the Speed Art Museum in Louisville. His Bellarmine Knight statue is the centerpiece of the school’s quad.

The free exhibit runs until June 14.

The Patio Gallery represents a broad variety of different media, artists groups, and individuals. It features shows that include sculptures, textiles, photography, and painting with approaches that range from representational to abstract, from traditional to cutting edge. According to Patio Gallery director Bette Levy, “We try to foster an appreciation of today’s 2D and 3D artists and we often include artists who reside outside of Louisville. In addition, we often offer exhibits that address significant social issues.”
