Well that was fun while it lasted.

After turning it on during July and the early part of August to break .500 and close within striking distance of the playoffs, the Bats fell to the Columbus Clippers 6-1 to complete a 4 game sweep and fall back in a crowded race for the Wild Card.

Yohan Pino took the loss, dropping to 4-6 on the year. He gave up four runs, all in the 4th, on 5 hits and a walk in 6 innings of work. He finished with 100 pitches and struck out 1 while raising his ERA to 2.95 on the year. Kevin Whalen and Ryan Dennick each gave up a run in relief, with Dennick walking 3 in only 1/3 of an inning.

Once again, the Bats were done in by a lack of offense. After scoring 31 runs during their 5 game winning streak, they’ve been outscored 36-7 during the losing streak. Last night was no different as the Bats managed just 1 run for the 4th time in those last 5 games, on 5 hits and 1 walk. Henry Rodriguez and Josh Fellhauer combined for 4 of those hits, with Fellhauer knocking home Mike Hessman with one of two doubles in the 7th for the Bats’ lone score.

Louisville has today off before starting an 8 day roadtrip in Pawtucket tomorrow night. The playoffs that looked like a possibility just days ago now seem very far away. Going into the games today the Bats sit 10 games off the division lead and 4.5 games out of the wild card with four teams ahead of them.  As they enter the final 20 games of the regular season, their playoffs start now.
