Louisville news: The British are coming, er, came, to Fancy Farm edition [News]

  • Prestigious British newspaper The Economist attends Fancy Farm: "It began with an announcement in a local newspaper on July 31st 1880. “There will be a barn dance, picnic and ‘gander pulling’ at Fancy Farm next Thursday. Those that have never seen the latter should turn out on this occasion. It will be interesting.” Ganders may no longer be pulled, and the date has migrated from the last Wednesday in July to the first Saturday in August, but for 130 years the Fancy Farm picnic has drawn celebrants hungry for barbecue and entertainment to this remote corner of western Kentucky."  [The Economist]
  • "A story in Friday’s Herald-Leader that indicated [Rand] Paul did not consider drug abuse a 'real pressing issue' in Appalachian Kentucky misconstrued a remark Paul made, his campaign spokesman said. 'As a father and a physician, Dr. Paul understands that drugs are a serious problem facing Eastern Kentucky, and agrees that we need a robust effort from government and local communities to combat it,' his campaign said in a statement. When Paul told the Associated Press that 'I don’t think it’s a real pressing issue,' he was responding to a question on whether voters would care who took the lead on enforcement efforts — the federal government or local governments, said his campaign spokesman, Gary Howard. Paul was not referring to the severity of the drug problem, his campaign said." [Bluegrass Politics]
