Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Christian music artist Matthew West regarding his current tour, Winter Jam, which also showcases well-known Christian artists such as Toby Mac, Newsong, and even former American Idol contestant, Jason Castro.
Matthew West began his career in Nashville, Tennessee. After attending college and studying music, West moved to Nashville and became a songwriter. At first, he was disappointed because he didn’t get a record deal; he told me “it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.” Some of his favorite artists (he mentioned Rascal Flatts and Michael W. Smith) picked up his songs, and, even now that he has a record deal, he still enjoys songwriting.
It has been many years since I’ve been able to attend a Winter Jam concert. In fact, Peter Furler was still lead singer for the Newsboys at my last Winter Jam. Now, Winter Jam features many more artists and even a speaker. When I asked Matthew West what I could expect, he told me, “It’s the perfect concert if you’re even slightly ADD. The minute you get bored another band comes onstage!”
West informed me that this tour includes artists who appeal to parents and kids alike and provides a positive environment for families. Instead of choosing to write songs with lyrics about drugs and partying, these artists choose to send out a good message; however, West says, “This is not your grandma’s Christian music - not that there’s anything wrong with your grandma’s music!”
West also gave me some information on speaker, Nick Hall. He said that, even with the music and noise, Hall is able to captivate the crowd with a powerful message about pushing the reset button on our lives, not being weighed down by yesterday, and looking forward to what God has in store. “What a great message for the new year!” he quips.
Winter Jam will take place in Louisville this weekend on February 2nd at Freedom Hall. The doors open at 5pm, and the show starts at 6pm. Tickets are $10 at the door; no tickets are required prior to the show.
