LOUISVILLE (July 27, 2005) - Mayor Jerry Abramson announced today that nearly $1 million in private funds have been donated in the past several weeks to support the development of Waterfront Park’s third and final phase.

Three donors who wish to remain anonymous provided the bulk of the $1 million – the largest gift being $500,000 from one. A fourth gift for $50,000 was provided by the William E. Barth Foundation, a long-time Waterfront supporter that also gave to the park’s second phase. A little more than $3 million remains to be raised for Phase III.

“It's wonderful to have the kind of generosity and community spirit among our citizens who have made these contributions and will have such a lasting impact on our Waterfront," said Abramson. "These anonymous gifts of nearly $1 million help bring us closer to completing our 20-year vision of a vibrant and beautiful park on the river's edge."

The first component of Phase III, river’s edge construction west of the Big Four Bridge, is out for bid and construction will begin this fall. Other portions of Phase III include the centerpiece, a pedestrian pathway over the Big Four Bridge; a spiral walkway up to the bridge; a continuation of pathways that will connect Phase I to Phase II; a plaza area with bench swings; and more picnic areas, lawn areas, groves of trees, and parking. Phase III should be completed in 2008.

Waterfront Park plays host to more than 1.5 million visitors per year for concerts, festivals, picnics, walking and jogging, and playing in the two playgrounds and waterplay area.
