    Where To Go

Midnights at the Baxter presents 'Chasing Amy'

I have a film recommendation for you. We're going to talk about Kevin Smith, but maybe not the Kevin Smith you know and love (or hate, perhaps – sometimes he can be polarizing). Clerks

is considered a classic of independent film, and he went on to make films in a similar vein such as

    Mallrats

    ,

    Dogma

    , and

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

. His most recent film, however, doesn't feel like Kevin Smith. It doesn't look like Kevin Smith. It is scary. It's a horror film without slashers or paranormal elements – just religious fundamentalism. It is

    Red State

: a film about three high school boys who find an older lady online to hook up with – but it turns out she is part of a Westboro Baptist Church-like Christian cult and has lured them into their compound to be made an example of. This is, in my opinion, one of the best films to come out of 2011. It's on Netflix instant streaming. Check it out.

In the meantime, we can also enjoy some classic Kevin Smith tomorrow, Saturday, as Baxter Avenue Theater presents a midnight screening of his third film, 1997's

    Chasing Amy.

Ben Affleck stars as Holden McNeil, one half of a duo of comic book artists (along with Banky Edwards, played by Jason Lee). At a comic book convention, they meet the beautiful Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), to whom Holden has an instant attraction – which becomes complicated when she turns out to be a lesbian. Still, the heart wants what it wants, and Holden is determined to have her.

Baxter Avenue Theater is located at 1250 Bardstown Road, in Mid-City Mall. Further theater information and advance ticket sales can be found at the Baxter Avenue Theater website.

    About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
