Midnights at the Baxter presents 'Jaws' [Movies]
Print this page

In about a month and a half, theaters will be hit with the highly anticipated new film by Steven Spielberg: Lincoln, a biopic about our 16th president. Frankly, I think it looks like a horrible caricature, based on the trailer – and his recent track record isn’t so great. Last year’s War Horse was atrocious and unintentionally hilarious, and while I’ve heard good things about The Adventures of Tintin, the last film he directed before it was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – and who liked that one?

To find the true greatness within Spielberg, we really need to go further back in his career: Raiders of the Lost Ark, for instance; E.T.; Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Good, fun, solid blockbusters. Great stuff. And, of course, perhaps the greatest of them all: Jaws.

Roy Scheider stars as Brody, police chief of Amity Island, a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches. However, people keep dying in the water – there is a man-eating shark out there, and the mayor refuses to shut down the beach, fearing a loss of serious tourist dollars. Thus, Brody, along with shark-hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) and oceanographer Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), sets out to make the beaches safe for everyone once again.

Baxter Avenue Theater presents a midnight screening of Jaws tomorrow, Saturday. The chance to see this classic on the big screen is not to be missed – it’s a good thing summer is over, because you won’t want to set foot in your pool after this.

Baxter Avenue Theater is located at 1250 Bardstown Road. Further theater information and advance ticket sales can be found at the theater’s website.

About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
