Autumn in the Arboretum
Wildlife depends on Bernheim’s native forest, grassland and wetland habitats for food and shelter. Invasive plants spread easily into these native plant communities and into our gardens and break the unique bond that plant communities and wildlife share. Bernheim is taking control of the noxious plants that are invading the natural forest and arboretum, and we need your help. Join an elite group of heroic weed wizards that participate in our Weed Police workdays and help Bernheim’s biologists and horticulturists conserve and restore healthy plant communities by removing invasive plants. Learn how to identify and effectively control bush honeysuckle, multiflora rose, Japanese grass and autumn olive, four plants that are threatening Bernheim’s wildlife habitat. The work may involve hand pulling, cutting with pruners or loppers, spraying with herbicide, or weed whacking. If you join us, be sure to wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt and closed-toe work shoes. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy in the forest! Work often takes place in areas of the natural forest generally accessible only to research scientists.
