Protesting is fine, but if you really want to make an impact—however slight it may be—on the future direction your government takes, you need to vote in the upcoming General Election. But, to vote, you need to register, and the deadline to register to vote for the first time, make an address change to a previously registered voter, change political party affiliation or update a name is Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
Voter registration cards can be dropped off at any Motor Vehicle Branch Service Center of the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office, or at the Jefferson County Election Center at 810 Barret Avenue, Room 103. The West Motor Vehicle Service Branch is open to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11th (Marchman Plaza – 3131 W. Broadway). The Deed Room in Metro Hall (Fifth & Jefferson Streets) can also accept voter registration forms up until the time that they close at 7:00 p.m.
A postmark of October 11th is also required for all mail-in voter registration applications. Registration cards can be obtained over the internet at www.vote.ky.gov/register.
If citizens are unsure whether they have registered to vote or uncertain as to where they will vote, they can view all of that information online through the Voter Information Center (VIC). The VIC will tell voters where they are registered to vote, the location of their polling site, and their political affiliation. It also provides links to elected representatives and driving directions from the voter’s home to his or her polling location. VIC can be accessed at www.vote.ky.gov/vic.
To obtain a list of county clerks and other voter registration sites in your area, contact the Kentucky State Board of Elections at (502) 573-7100 or via the web at www.elect.ky.gov.
