Norton Suburban Hospital's Women Pavilion doesn't expect mothers to work, or dads to be involved in parenting [Updated Feb. 19]

Print

My wife received this flyer from Norton Suburban Hospital's Women Pavilion five weeks after our daughter was born and one week before her maternity leave is up. Seems Norton Suburban assumes

  • new moms don't need to go back to work
  • fathers are not involved in parenting
  • one month after his or her birth, the state hasn't taken away your child yet

Update: Feb. 19, 2010

The director of women's services at Norton Suburban Hospital said that it recently started including information about New Mommy 101 in packets given to women as they leave the hospital.

And despite the name, new dads are welcome to attend New Mommy 101.

Well Done Zach!

It's simple, to the point and there is nothing much left to say. You are absolutely right. And this is what our society has come to.

Welcome to parenthood in the

Welcome to parenthood in the south. As a working mom (with a stay at home husband), it's a very interesting experience. Our poor daughter is limited in her social interactions b/c everything is Mommy-driven!

I just think they may not

I just think they may not have the funds to hold day meetings for Dad's or night meetings for mom's when only 2 are showing up. They might give out questionnaires that help them determine times that are good for the families, to be offended is on you, not a statement of the Hospital.

I gave birth at Norton and

I gave birth at Norton and agree that my care and treatment was excellent. However I agree with the assessment that Norton stereotypes parental roles in it's class offerings. When I first looked into classes at Norton I was appalled that the "daddy" classes were offered in the late evening where as the new (or even soon-to-be) mom classes were offered during the day. As a professional soon-to-be mom I would have to rearrange my busy schedule to make any of these day classes. If I were to attend the "new dad" classes I would not have to do so. It is clear to me (as it should be to anyone) Norton has made a statement: moms can make day classes, dads can make night classes. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to read into their rational for this: dads work, moms do not. While I agree that new mom's may have unique issues (I know I did) getting a letter 5 weeks into maternity leave inviting just "new mommies" (in my case my husband could have made these classes I could not) is the furthering of a stereotype. Why not have evening, weekend, or new family offerings in the same letter. Cause Norton we might be in KY but we ain't in 1950's KY!

Are you serious? Please

Are you serious? Please don't tell me you actually get PAID to write articles like this. This is observational humor/criticism at it's worst. I'm regretting following Louisville.com if this is the stuff you keep bringing to our attention.

Why

What's so wrong with pointing out that the hospital schedules it's new mom classes at a time when working women can't attend them without having to take time off from work?

Norton

I had 2 babies in the past 3 years @ Suburban and they were both wonderful experiences. Mothers are dealing with many hormonal, emotional, and physical issues after having a baby and support groups like this seem to have value. Most mothers are looking for support on a variety of levels (dads are as well, but mom's issues are what this group is addressing) soon after the birthing process and most employers grant at least 6 weeks off which is enough time to go to a class or two. (Fathers get FMLA as well btw) This class seems to be something that most moms more than likely would not go to for much longer than that anyway. A lot of moms and dads probably took advantage of the wide array of evening and weekend prep classes that they offer as well. I am confused by the comment about the state taking ones child away? What is that about and why is issue taken with a hospital trying to support mothers who have just given birth?

Interesting that you would

Interesting that you would glean that observation from this flyer. First off, why wouldn't a hospital be able to hold a "Mommy 101" class? Personally, I don't even have a child, but I could guarantee that mothers would have special issues to address (Such as lactating). There is no reason why the father has to be included in everything. I'm assuming that you're saying that because the class is from 10AM to Noon that Norton doesn't think mothers should go back to work? To that I say... Since when do people only work first shift? It's just a bit of a ridiculous statement all together. What is your motivation for posting this? Are you with a competing hospital? Calling a company sexist is a very strong statement. Regardless... I was raised by a single FATHER. I can't imagine how hard it was for him. I wish they would have had a class for him. What would be wrong with that?

Motivation

My motivation is solely that we just got the flyer and it irked my wife, especially as she's sensitive about having to go back to work. As for the hospital being sexist, notice how all New Mommy 101 classes are during the day while the Becoming a New Dad classes (which they do have, but didn't mention on the flyer) are conveniently scheduled for 7:30 p.m., that is, after work. Take home message: men work, women't don't. That's sexist.

no surprise there!

Norton Hospitals also offer an impressive array of free programs for cancer patients-- yoga, exercise classes, makeovers, counseling, art therapy, massages, nutrition seminars... all scheduled M-F, usually in the morning or early afternoon. So they also assume that if you have/have had cancer, you're not working. Because, you know, OMG YOU'RE DISEASED!
