Paintings as Meditation: The Work of Brian Millar

Paintings without identifiable subjects are certainly not a new or extreme idea in the modern art scene, however, the work produced by local artist and carpenter Brian Millar adds a new and refreshing dimension to this line of painting. Millar, whose mother was an artist, grew up with a love and talent for the process of object and image making. In his paintings Millar frequently creates patterns and uses layering techniques that give his images a luminous and gem-like quality that draw the viewer in to experience the richness of the painted surface. Using painting as a form of meditation, Millar paints without particular images or objects to represent and in their stead, focuses on the act of painting itself and interacts with the painting as it forms. Beginning with a loaded brush he allows marks and shapes to form and relate to one another. As the painting comes closer to resolution, he clarifies various relationships between painted elements and how a viewer may perceive them. The result: vivid and dynamic paintings whose two main subjects are color and brushstroke. Filled with colors, contrasts, and excitement, Brian Millars paintings will be on display in the Kaviar Forge Gallery from January 11th through February 24. The Artist's Receptions are January 26 and February 23 from 6-9 pm. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday 1-6, Saturday 12-4, and by appointment. Kaviar Forge is located at 1718 Frankfort Avenue, Louisville, Kentucky 40206. Phone: (502) 561-377. website:
