The 2012 edition of Park(ing) Day 502 featured several parking spaces in Downtown Louisville and NuLu, as well as three spaces in Clifton Center, the Highlands and the University of Louisville, each transformed into an ephemeral public park where visitors could take part in activities such as 15-second interviews with WFPL, mini golf in front of City Hall, or learn basic CPR after playing with dogs up for adoption next door.
The event, co-presented in Louisville this year by urbanization blogs Broken Sidewalk and MapGrapher, and by U of L's Urban Design Studio, is meant to draw attention to the need for more green public spaces in cities, and to bring about debate on how urban space is installed, with the overall intent being the improvement upon the quality of life in Louisville and other cities throughout the United States and the world.
Some of this year's participants included WFPL, who gave their visitors 15 seconds to answer a random question; 21c Museum Hotel, who displayed in their space the installation "TrailerPark" by Seattle artists SuttonBeresCuller; Louisville EMS, who taught passersby basic CPR when not playing with the dogs in Louisville Metro Animal Service's space next door (your author did learn said CPR, by the way); and the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft, who let visitors compose a one-sentence story on a leaf, placing it upon a tree with a hook through it, then letting it be.
This year's Park(ing) Day 502 marks the fifth anniversary of Louisville's participation, the global movement established in 2005 by San Francisco art and design studio Rebar. The one-day affair took place alongside the 2012 IdeaFestival and NuLu Fest, capping off a week-long celebration of ideas, innovations and demonstrations of creativity throughout the urban center of Louisville.
