Louisville has some pretty amazing restaurants, and I love searching for new ones to add to my list of favorites. A few weeks ago I found myself in the presence of the owner of Chef Maria’s Greek Deli in St. Matthews and immediately everyone within earshot started clamoring about how amazing the food was. I was surprised I had never heard about it since I love Greek food so much. I could eat Spanikopita every day. So I made a mental note to check it out and moved on.
Then last week I was driving home hungry through St. Matthews at lunch time and I spotted it behind the construction barricade across from Trinity High School. I went inside the small takeout-only deli (I recall hearing something about the space only having one bathroom so they can’t have tables for dine-in) and began studying the menu. The offerings change daily and feature at least six kinds of hummus, multiple gyros, soups, salads, and appetizers.
Since I was too hungry to think I ordered Feta Cheese olives and two lamb “On the Go” gyros. As I sat there waiting for my food I wandered into the adjoining room where Chef Maria teaches Greek cooking classes every Wednesday and Saturday. The walls were adorned with photographs and descriptions of authentic Mediterranean dishes such as falafel, moussaka, and lamb shank. But in addition to the traditional offerings were things like teriyaki chicken and fajita lamb Gyros. As I continued to study the menu I saw that you could order takeout build-your-own Gyros for a family dinner, frozen meals, or have your party catered with yummy Greek Fusion food.
When I arrived home with my food, I opened the container with my olives and feta cheese to find huge chunks of feta snuggled up next to sliced cucumbers and tomatoes topped with oil, spices, and Kalamata olives. There was so much I could have eaten just that for lunch, but I decided to save room for my Gyro. Keep in mind I got the smallest Gyro on the menu- the “On-the-Go” authentic Greek Gyro. It was massive and full of delicious lamb, tzatziki, and all the accoutrements. If takeout can be this good, I can’t wait to have my next party catered by Chef Maria.
The next time you need an easy takeout lunch or dinner for the family, give Chef Maria a call. With such an extensive menu there is something to please everyone in the family. I also heard rumor of peanut butter and jelly Baklava. The menu changes daily so consult their website for the latest in Greek Fusion Cuisine.
