After the turkey carcass has been picked clean and the gravy congealed, make use of the much needed time off with the family next weekend. The rest of the town will be fighting for parking spaces at the movie theaters or grappling for deals under intoxicating florescent lights at the malls, but if you're smart, you'll stick to one of the following family-friendly and refreshingly simple events.

The American Printing House for the Blind is hosting their open house Saturday, November 27th from 10:00-3:00. Located at 1839 Frankfort Avenue, the APH for the Blind offers guests a chance to write their names in braille, view the book of psalms from Helen Keller's bible, play a video game designed for a blind child, and view the latest in sonar/electronic devices for the blind as well as guide dog equipment. What a better way to educate your children about this issue and to add some perspective for giving thanks. Call 895-2405 ext. 365 for more information.

Locust Grove is also hosting a "Family Day" at their historic home located at 561 Blankenbaker Ln. next Friday the 26th from 10:00-4:30. Costumed demonstrators will be in the kitchen and wood-shop from 11-2 and the Locust Grove Dollhouse, an exact replica of Historic Locus Grove as it looked in 1979, will be unveiled in the log cabin. The gift shop will be offering 20% off discounts all day. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-12. Fore more information, contact Bonny Wise at 897-9845 or www.locustgrove.org.

Lastly, charge into the next frenzied holiday by visiting Light Up Louisville downtown for the event's 30th birthday. Food, beverage, fireworks and plenty of Santa-heavy events will begin at 3:00 pm with the big energy- pumping unveiling of the lights scheduled at 9:00. For more information, visit www.lightuplouisville.org.

Or, scrap the whole thing and take the kids to the race track and have some real Louisville post-Thanksgiving fun. Happy Holidays!
