Rachel Alexandra, who gave birth to a filly by Bernardini early Tuesday morning, is recovery from surgery today related to complications from the birth of the 140-pound baby born at Stonestreet Farm.
In a statement released by Stonestreet Farm late Wednesday night, it was announced that the seven-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro and Lotta Kim was taken to Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington, Ky. where she underwent surgery to repair an area of bruising on her small colon related to the birth of her filly. The mare is in recovery, but a full prognosis could not be given at this time. She is listed in serious condition and her owners are asking fans for their prayers.
“We are solely focused on making sure Rachel is as comfortable as possible," said owner, Barbara Banke. "She is showing the same strength and courage now that she demonstrated on the track. Our hearts are broken by this turn of events and I can only ask that you send your thoughts and prayers to Rachel now.”
The filly born Tuesday morning is doing well and is at Stonestreet Farm. She will be cared for my a nurse mare. More information regarding the birth can be found here.
Although Stonestreet Farm has not issued an updated press release, Kentucky.com is reporting that Rachel Alexandra had a portion of her colon removed. She is now standing, which is a good sign. Also, Rood & Riddle held a brief press conference that aired on HRTV in which it was revealed that exploratory surgery performed in relation to Rachel Alexandra's condition uncovered the bruise. She remains in the recovery barn at Rood & Riddle in Lexington. Her condition is listed as serious and stable.
