Road to the Kentucky Derby: Analyzing the Fountain of Youth

With two lightly-raced favorites making their stakes debuts, bettors may find more value in some of the experienced runners in Saturday’s field. Wildcat Red, set at a morning line of 6-1, has crossed the wire first in four of his five career starts, but has a win record of three after he was disqualified and placed second in the Juvenile Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park back in November. He started off his sophomore campaign strong losing by a head to General a Rod in the ungraded Gulfstream Park Derby Jan. 1 and dominated a field of nine with a 4 ¾ length win in the Hutcheson Stakes (G3) Feb. 1. Gulfstream Park is his home track and the only place he’s ever run, so he’ll have that advantage. He’s likely to be on or close to the lead and has the best speed figures in the field. Whether or not he goes on to be a Classic winner or even contender, he’s possibly the most likely winner in this edition of the Fountain of Youth. Jockey Luis Saez will be in the irons for trainer Jose Garoffalo.

If you like Wildcat Red, you have to like General a Rod who beat him by a head in the Gulfstream Park Derby. This Mike Maker trainee hasn’t raced since that Jan. 1 victory, but has a solid work tab that includes a bullet work. Jockey Javier Castellano inherits the mount from Joel Rosario.

The field from the rail out with odds is: Commissioner 3-1, We Miss Artie 8-1, Medal Count 15-1, Wildcat Red 6-1, General a Rod 5-1, Casiguapo 30-1, C. Zee 12-1, Almost Famous 10-1, Best Plan Yet 20-1, Our Caravan 30-1, Hesinfront 20-1, Top Billing 7-2, and East Hall 20-1.

The race is the 11th on Gulfstream Park’s Saturday card with a scheduled post time of 5:33 p.m. EST. It can be seen on HRTV and TVG. Click here for free race PPs courtesy of Brisnet.
