Sarabande Declares February the Month of Pie (and Poetry)

In case you didn’t already know, I will be attending Pie School (yes, you read that correctly) with Kate Lebo tomorrow. Have you RSVP’d yet? (Just email Kristen Miller at kmiller@sarabandebooks.org to see if there are still spaces!) Consider my pencils all sharpened. But what you might not know is that Pie School is actually part of a larger Sarabande Books Pie Party.

Sarabande knows what’s up and understands the key to unlocking this ice cream-cold heart: a pie jubilee hosted each year in honor of their Flo Gault Student Poetry Prize contest winners.

While you may recognize that I love sweets more than the average Joe, I also confess that I happen to think poetry is, dare I say it, ridiculously cool. I love that we have a local independent publishing company that appreciates this. We should never overlook how words can curl themselves around our consciousness and embed new consequence to our souls. The unique power of poetry is that each word wields so much value.

The annual Flo Gault Student Poetry Competition encourages students braving to share exclusive pieces of themselves through creative expression. Sarabande’s annual Pie Party in turn celebrates the winners by slicing up culinary poetry: pieces of pie from local hot spots.

Special congratulations are in order to Lauren Hannigan, the winner of the 2013 competition. Just watching her spoken word performance of “Bugaloo” reaffirms that there is no age-restriction for poetic sensibility. Hit play to watch this poet rock your socks. I hope she attains some particularly scrumptious sugary treats at the party.

Last year, phenom poet and University of Louisville professor Kiki Petrosino (writer of the acclaimed Fort Red Border, a defining book that revolutionizes the way we can view poetry) conceived an excellent poem for the purpose of this very shindig. Louisville is in part a booming city due to its arts scene, which is completely on point.

This Sunday, I look forward to meeting the fresh talent Sarabande handpicked for their 2013 contest. These events make me feel quite proud of my hometown.
