The Cherokee Triangle Art Fair, held the weekend before Derby, is a favorite preview of—an alternative to, even—the St. James Court fair in the fall. Get a taste of the Highlands’ favorite public event Friday, April 23, when the Legal Aid Society hosts its signature fundraising event, “Brush, Bottle and Barrel of the Bluegrass.”

The event, now in its seventh year, will feature 15 participating Cherokee Triangle Art Fair artists and their work, which will be available for purchase in advance of the fair. That’s the “Brush” part. The “Bottle” and “Barrel,” of course, refer to the Kentucky wines, beers and “Bluegrass” bourbons guests will be invited to sample. “The big draw is the art and the beverages,” says says Meagen Peden Agnew, development director at Legal Aid. “There will be 12 to15 wineries, distilleries and breweries altogether.” Only Kentucky-produced libations will be available, with their makers on hand to answer questions and educate the uninitiated.

There will also be heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Atria Senior Living (no cafeteria food here—Agnew emphatically describes it as “awesome”) and a silent auction, also benefiting the Legal Aid Society.

Last year, the Legal Aid Society in Kentucky helped pursue justice for more than 4,500 people who couldn’t otherwise afford legal help, such as the elderly, children and victims of domestic violence. The 2009 event drew more than 500 people and raised over $45,000 for this fund.

The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the Mary Rodes Lannert Athletic Center at Louisville Collegiate School, 2427 Glenmary Avenue. Tickets are $75 and may be purchased in advance or at the door. To purchase tickets in advance or learn about tax-deductible sponsorship opportunities, please visit

or call (502) 584-1254. Free valet parking is available, and the event is wheelchair accessible.
