The social media monster wants to devour you, stop fighting it [Technology]

Social Media isn’t just for the casual user anymore. As you walk around the city of Louisville (or any city for that matter) you’ll be hard pressed to find advertisements and billboards that don’t say somewhere on them “Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.”

If you are a business, small or large, and you aren’t using social media to promote your business you are light years behind all of your competitors. Visit The Comfy Cow or Sweet CeCe’s Facebook pages and read about customers’ favorite treats and flavors and stay up-to-date on any events or promotions going on at their various locations.

If you follow @LouisvilleBats on Twitter, you’ll get play-by-play updates of games as well as news and promotional information from your favorite minor league baseball team. Many social media users love to follow their favorite local radio stations, news channels, and publications. There truly is no other media outlet that can provide information and content faster than and to as many people as social media.

Want more? Go to Tumblr.com and type “Louisville” in the tag search bar and an infinite list of user’s content including photos, videos, links and comments related to the city will fill your screen.

Oh, that’s still not enough social interaction for you? If you take a look around, with just a little bit of astute observation you’ll notice little square-shaped barcode looking things everywhere you go. They might be on a receipt, business card, poster, or if you’re on Bardstown Rd., a billboard. These are called QR codes. With a simple barcode scanning app on your smartphone, you can snap the QR code with your camera and instantly be redirected to – you guessed it – more content.

The social madness doesn’t end there! Using a little thing called Foursquare can allow social-savvy folks to “check-in” to their favorite restaurants and venues and leave tips for other users or claim discounts on their purchases. You can completely skip the “checking-in” mess and use sites like livingsocial.com or groupon.com and take advantage of local deals in your city.

It’s a lot, I know. Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with continuing to just use your Facebook to post family pictures and stalk your friends or using your Twitter to tweet about your latest complaint. However, the social media monster will continue to evolve and devour all of your favorite businesses, closest friends and beloved family.

It just wouldn’t be an article about social media if I didn’t tell you that you can follow us on Twitter, like us on Facebook and friend us on Foursquare. Also catch up with some of our advertisers like the Louisville Bats, Check’s Café and The Bard’s Town. Go ahead do what all the cool people are doing, get social.

Completely agree with your

Completely agree with your views. We have to accept the inclusion and potentiality of social media whether we are with or against it. They are not only for entertainment but also the place of huge and fresh information and updates. So better be a part of it.

Social Media and the E-World's Negative Side

Social Media requires that you be chained to a device - instead of doing things you are behind your PC or your smartphone.  Sigh... you could be looking at something instead of immediately tweedling to someone else.

This weekend, instead of sitting behind my PC, playing games, tweeting, or blogging, I was at a 2-day motorcycle race track school.  Guess who had more fun, me at the track or someone blogging boiled cabbage or their annoying political views???

I have watched my son spend more time behind his PC working on his phacebook page or gaming than actually getting out of the house and doing stuff. Guess which is healthier??? Tortilla chips, a canned soda, and a PC or a hike/walk/outside activity?

Are there good sides to this stuff? Yes, definitely - information is much more freely available, and I can read a review of a restaraunt or store before going. Is it a substitute for a real life? Definitely NOT!!!

Will the Social Media monster devour me? Never - there are too many more enjoyable things to do out there than sit behind a keyboard and pretend to live.

Cheers / Robert

Re: Robert

I totally agree. Social media shouldn't be a way of life. There is so much more to life than what you see through your digital screens.

I believe users should exercise healthy use habits when it comes to social media as with any other activity that could be over-used.

When you go on a hike or go to a motorcycle school, socially driven people might choose to 'check-in' or take photos and share them with all of their friends.

I grew up with video games and a little bit of the internet. If I was inside too much, my mom simply threw me outside.

There's a difference in utilizing tools that are available for you to enjoy and using them to no end. Social media can provide countless ways to share and communicate with others. Some more technically-apt people are choosing to embrace and take advantage of its benefits while others will continue to pass.

Thanks very much for your comments Robert. You are certainly not the only one that feels that way.

Good with the bad

Like Michael said, there are great uses for social media, but there is something to be said for people that over-use it.  I know that the other day when the storms popped up out of nowhere, and there were tornado warnings, some people commented that they were glad Louisville.com was giving updates via their Twitter account because those people were without electricity and were getting their weather info via social media; I'd like to think in that instance that someone could have been kept safe because of Twitter.

Social media is like a lot of other things...used in moderation it can be great, abused it can make someone into a walking zombie, detached from the real world...I think I'll go for a walk ;-)
