In 2008 not only was the city of Louisville abuzz but professional football as a whole couldn’t stop talking about Brian Brohm.
The young quarterback for the University of Louisville who had an amazing career with the Cards, was a major contender for the Heisman Trophy and seemed to have a great deal of potential. Out of high school Brohm was such a stand-out commodity that he received scholarship offers from Notre Dame, Alabama, Pittsburgh and a plethora of other schools.
Staying at home, Brohm instantly made an impact on UofL, winning the Conference USA Freshman of the Year award in his first season. In Brohm’s sophomore season, he won the starting spot with the Cards and at this point he really became a star at the school, leading the team to an Orange Bowl victory over Wake Forest, in addition Brohm won the MVP award of the game.
At the conclusion of the 2007 season Brohm, now a junior, had generated a great deal of heat. And, many analysts believed that he could lead the Cards to another BCS Bowl Game, perhaps even a national title. Unfortunately, the team wasn’t able to deliver on this as they went 6-6 on the season.
None the less, Brohm still had a lot of pro eyes on him as he entered the 2008 NFL draft. And, sure enough Brohm entered in the NFL in the second round of the draft with the Green Bay Packers.
The Packers plan was to put Brohm against another college stand-out quarterback, Louisiana State’s Matt Flynn for the position backing up Aaron Rodgers. Flynn beat Brohm out, and after a brief stint on the practice squad the Louisville stand-out became a Buffalo Bill, even starting for the team at one point.
Today Brohm suits up with the United Football League’s Las Vegas Locomotives, a team he has played for since the 2011 season. He remains a steady possibility for a number of NFL teams though trying out and impressing the Detroit Lions, the New Orleans Saints, and the San Francisco 49ers recently.
