The Glass Menagerie features the lives and illusions of the Wingfield family. The Wingfield family members find themselves either dealing with a reality they cannot accept while others attempt to escape. Among the people include a Southern aristocrat now living in poverty, a handicapped person forced to turn inward due to her mother, and an alcoholic who turns to movies for escape.
Tennessee Williams created The Glass Menagerie, which is based partly on his life. The play premiered in 1944 and became arguably one of Williams's best-known works.
