I take my kids to the Louisville Zoo a lot. Well usually. This summer has been exceptionally hot so we haven't been as often. I have been waiting for the "big cool down" and with 85 degrees on Wednesday I thought that was it. Well, it was still hot at the zoo, but we prepared and took advantage of some of the options available there.
The Louisville Zoo has some really nice shaded areas and the fans and mist were turned on throughout. Glacier Run has a few air conditioned viewing areas as well. Plus the exhibits in The Islands Pavilion, Herpaquarium and Metazoo are also air conditioned. I generally plan to visit that side of the zoo last so we can cool off after visiting the outdoor exhibits.
Tips for staying cool at the zoo:
•Wear light colored clothing
•Drink lots of water. You can bring it in with you or purchase it there.
•Wear a hat or sun visor.
•Take a personal (battery operated) fan.
•Take advantage of the fans and water mist around the zoo.
•Visit the air conditioned exhibits.
•Stop and rest on occasion.
•Plan your visit in the morning when it's cooler.
•Visit the Splash Park (open through the second week in September)
Yesterday was much cooler and the temperatures are forecasted to be cool for a little while. Plan a zoo trip and take advantage of the great weather and, now that school is starting, the smaller crowds.
