Step out diabetes walk this Saturday [Sports]

For the past eleven years and in 160 cities across the United States, the Step Out Diabetes walk has become a staple for those looking to aid in support of diabetes research and treatment.

And, Saturday the walk comes to Louisville. Led by local sports legend Darrell Griffith, who will act as the honorary walk chair, the event is an attempt to raise money and awareness for the disease.

The event is set to commence at Waterfront Park at eight a.m., when registration will begin. The race will start at nine, and entrants are encouraged to register here.

During the event outside activities will also be available such as a Kids’ play area and a breakfast after the walk concludes.

Individuals who walk are also encouraged to establish their own personal websites here where they can accept donations and draft others to support. After all, as the organization puts it themselves, “it’s more fun to step out together.”

Strollers and dogs on leashes are also welcome on the track, as a welcoming atmosphere is hoped to be achieved with the event.

One of the most unique parts of this particular walk though is the Red Strider program, this is for individuals with diabetes who come out to walk themselves, Red Striders will be able to register themselves by checking a box during registration or call 1-888-DIABETES to let the organization know, Striders will be given a free gift and will attain “VIP” status.

Teams are also encouraged, as individuals who start a team are “Team Captains,” they will recruit others to join them in the walk and will raise money for their teams. By the way, a number of local businesses have begun their own teams, so ask around and see if your place of business already has a group going out to support the cause.

About Dave Rose
Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
