Late last night I found myself thinking about something my buddy Chas Kuhn, from Louisville.com, had tweeted out earlier in the day; it was the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, the pure epitome of what summer is: warm days, green trees, singing birds, and to me -- strawberries!!
It just so happened that I had a bottle of Abita's Strawberry Harvest Lager in my fridge that I had picked up at Old Town Wine and Spirits a few days before and had somewhat forgotten about...until a friendly reminder came to me via Chas' tweet.
I pulled off the cap and poured, enjoying the faint aroma of real, Louisiana strawberries. It pours with a golden, amber color and is very light and drinkable. The strawberry notes are subtle and it is far from a "fruity" beer, as you would consider a citrusy brew like Blue Moon. The strawberry popped through a little more as the beer warmed slightly, but still far from overpowering.
This wasn't an amazing beer to me, but it was solidly drinkable and did its job of helping me to enjoy a summer evening. It's only 4.2% ABV and 13 IBU's, so you can sit around outside and enjoy a few with friends. Abita's website suggests pairing it with desserts (I'm thinking strawberry shortcake) or salads & pastas. Beeradvocate.com gives it a solid B rating while Ratebeer.com only gives it a score of 30. I am curious what others who haven't tried this beer will think of it. So, if you comment on the link to this article on the Lville Beer Facebook page, I'll randomly pick a "winner" on Friday and will meet them at Old Town Wine & Spirits on Monday and buy one for you (if they are still available; I make no guarantees that Old Town will still have them in stock, but hey, take a shot, right?).
