My boyfriend and I are both from the ever so exciting state of Iowa (not Idaho), and it is our duty to become professional tour guides whenever our family members come to visit because they can't just sit and hang out with us here...they have to go all Griswald on us. With that said, I have compiled my top 5 must see sites that will satisfy your out-of-towner's craving.
1) Churchill Downs and The Derby Museum: Pretty sure this one's a "no-brainer". You think Kentucky...you think horses...Churchill Downs. Every family member/friend that has come here has really enjoyed the museum for the great history that it holds.
2) 4th Street Live!: This works great if you have older guest or younger guests. Obviously we have nothing like this in Iowa so the older crowd are always impressed to see it in the daylight and maybe have lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants. And for the younger crowd, take 'em out at night and show them every type of bar scene you can imagine.
3) Slugger Museum: Even if you're not into sports, its really interesting to go on the tour...and they even have a batting cage that my 63 year old mother went in! It was rather hilarious to see her do better than my sister.
4) Louisville Zoo: I've been to other zoos before, but the Louisville Zoo has a special feel to it with a great layout. They always have a new kind of animal or babys to Awww over. The "Run Throo The Zoo" 5k is actually my favorite race because the sites never get old; however, the hills in that place are heinous to run up!
5) Louisville Original Restaurants: I know there are plenty of other places to see in Louisville, but the vast amounts of great restaurants are something to been seen and tasted. My absolute musts are 301 Bistro and Ramsi's (their fish tacos are awesome!).
Like I said, I'm sure there are other great places to show visitors, but for my guests, this works good enough to get them through the weekend they are here. I'm beginning to think my visitors don't even come to see me, but to go on a mini vacations and use my apartment as a free hotel. I'm sure that's not the case...is it mom?
