Talley's "Urban Dance" Captures Both Elegance and Spontaneity of Dance

Print

Kevin Talley's  “Urban Dance” gallery opening and reception at the Brown Hotel this evening showcased images of ballerinas posed against industrial and urban backgrounds, providing a visual contrast that was nothing short of stunning. The photographs highlighted the traditional elegance, the rigor and the technique of ballet—while also capturing a spontaneous impression that kept the collection feeling modern and relevant.

The event was originally planned for December 6, which happened to be the night of Great Louisville Snowstorm of 2013—also known as the evening that Louisville was hit with about 3 to 4 inches of snow (and as we know, Louisvillians and snow do not necessarily mix well.) And Kevin had to make the difficult decision to reschedule. But the delay didn’t dampen Kevin’s exuberance in preparing for his first gallery showing.

“I believe everything, good or bad, happens for a reason. After being in photography for only a year, I cannot think of a better way to end my year and start a new one than with an opening here,” Talley paused and gestured toward the lobby of the Brown. “Urban Dance” will be on display for five weeks.

However, in addition to the aesthetic purpose of "Urban Dance", Kevin’s gallery reception had a deeper element of meaning. One of his most joyous pieces—a large, vibrantly colored print in which a dancer is turning while throwing autumn leaves vivaciously above of her head—was being auctioned off for Jill’s Wish.

Jill’s Wish is a Louisville nonprofit started by Jill Brzezinski-Conley. Brzezinski-Conley was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer and began collecting money, not for herself, but to help other families minimize their financial struggle while they go through cancer allowing more time to focus on recovery.

"I heard her story and just knew that I wanted to help in any way I could," Talley said.
