Last weekend opened with one of the biggest high school football games in the country, let alone the state; that is when regional powerhouses squared off yet again for the annual rivalry game between The Trinity Shamrocks and The St. X Tigers.

Kicking off once again at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, Trinity came in with a 2-3 record; playing no teams in the area. Instead, the Shamrocks have been focusing on taking national powerhouses, which has contributed to their national ranking.

Prior to Friday the Green and White had found victories in Carmel, Indiana against Carmel high school and Indianapolis Cathedral high school, conversely, the suffered defeats at the hands of Nashville’s Ensworth, Indinapolis’ Lawrence Central, and Cincinatti’s Corelain high school.

Meanwhile, St. X came to Friday’s night’s game with a record of 4-2, who mixed up their opponents between local schools and national powerhouses. The Tigers grabbed victories against Ballard, Lexington Catholic, Fairdale and Central, while they lost to Bowling Green and Cincinatti’s Archbishop Moeller high school.

The match-up between these two local titans kicked off at 8, and immediately Trinity showed their power grabbing a touchdown in the first quarter; the only score in the opening quarter.

Not to be outdone in the second, St. X responded to this with a touchdown and field goal of their own however, Trinity kept it’s steady flow by throwing up another TD on the board, meaning going into half time the teams had both fought, keeping the game close at 14-10 with Trinity on top.

As the game when into its second act, Trinity put another six points up that were unanswered by St. X in the third; which led the game to its final quarter and the Tiger’s last breath, as they grabbed another TD, that was answered by the Shamrocks who again one out the quarter with 9 points of their own.

Despite, a hard fought battle the Tiger’s went down to Trinity as the final buzzer sounded with a score of 29-17.

Trinity will go on, on Friday to meet Manual in their next kickoff, while St. X ironically will square off against Manual rival, Male on Friday.

About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
