U of L's African-American Theatre Program goes to the tropics for its performances of Once on This Island, which opens today.

Once on This Island will take place on Jan. 30, 31, Feb. 1, and 2 at 8 p.m. each day.  Matinees, meanwhile, will take place on Feb. 2 and 3 at 3 p.m. each day.  All performances are to happen at The Playhouse, located at 1911 South Third Street on the U of L campus.  (Look for the white church-like building.)

Tickets for each show are $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $10 for senior citizens.  Tickets can be purchased at the door or at the U of L box office, located in the Studio Arts building on campus.  The box office phone number is 502-852-6814.  Keep in mind there is no intermission during this show.

Once on This Island features a young peasant island girl, Ti Moune, who falls for Daniel, a boy of much higher class stature.  On this island, gods watch over the island as peasants and those of higher class live opposite of each other.  Ti Moune and Daniel's story intertwines elements of Romeo and Juliet, The Little Mermaid, and other fairy tales as they explore the gift and power of love.

The musical features Jodi Ann Henry as Ti Moune and Robbie McCracken as Daniel.  Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty created the production, which Nefertit Burton directed for the African-American Theatre Program.

Following Once on This Island, U of L theatre arts will present The White Rose.  That production will open on Feb. 27.
