The U of L Floyd Theater presents 'Bad Grandpa' and '42'
Print this page

Today, we are going to talk about brave men facing up to impossible odds. We are going to talk about men who looked in the face of social norms and societal expectations and spat in their face, because they believed in something bigger than what our culture could offer. One of these men is Jackie Robinson. The other man is Johnny Knoxville dressed up as an 86-year-old man screwing with people.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, the University of Louisville Floyd Theater presents an advance screening of Bad Grandpa, a spinoff of the Jackass TV show and movies in which Knoxville adopts his Irving Zisman persona for a film with an actual plot (rather than merely stunts and pranks as in the original series). Zisman is accompanied by his eight-year-old grandson, with whom he is tasked with taking to his father. Along the way, they get into all sorts of wacky shenanigans amongst actual real people. Bad Grandpa is being shown four days in advance of its theatrical release, and this screening is free. It takes place at 8:00.

Come back on Thursday to see the story of another great American, the iconic Jackie Robinson, portrayed by Chadwick Boseman in the film 42. Jackie Robinson was, of course, the first black man to play Major League Baseball. The film tells the story of his signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers amidst a great deal of controversy. 42 plays at the Floyd Theater at 5:00 and 8:00. Admission is $1.50 for students and $3 for the general public.

The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.

About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
