Music, drama, and performance will be part of U of L's honoring of Martin Luther King, Jr. during a free event later today.

U of L's African-American Theatre Program and the Office of Business Affairs will co-sponsor The Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration today at 1 p.m. at The Playhouse, located on the U of L campus at Cardinal Blvd.  (Look for the white church-like building between 2nd and 3rd Streets).  The event is free and open to the public.

During the event, multiple presentations will take place, including performances by the Black Diamond Choir, tap dancer and alto sax musician Idris Ackamoor, and a dramatic performance from the African-American Theatre Program.  An address about the Medea Project and the presentation of the Thomas C. Smith Service Award will also take place.

Along with the free event there will also be free refreshments and free parking.  More information on the event can be found by contacting Hank Bullitt at (502) 852-8443.

U of L's theatre arts department, meanwhile, is preparing for its next production, Once on This Island.  That production will take place beginning Jan. 30.  More information on the show, the African-American Theatre Program, of U of L theatre arts in general, can be found at this website.
