Urban Bourbon exhibit opens at Kentucky Derby Museum [Attractions]

The Kentucky Derby Museum chronicles the history of the Kentucky Derby and provides interactive educational exhibits related to the Derby and the horse industry. The Urban Bourbon exhibit, housed in the Matt Winn Gallery on the second floor of the museum, brings this same interactive museum experience to showcase the bourbon industry. The exhibit features various interactive areas which include information about how bourbon got its name; a timeline of bourbon and racing in the city; the family dynasties that became the leaders of the industry; what makes whiskey bourbon; displays of vintage ads, memorabilia, and other bourbon collectibles; and a special sniff display allowing guests to smell bourbon in various stages.

The center attraction of the exhibit is the fully-functional bar in the exhibit room which includes a video monitor and interactive iPad allowing visitors to “order” a drink from the virtual bartender. Guests select from a variety of drink recipes that will activate an instructional video about how to make the cocktail. The display also offers additional videos discussing various bourbon-related facts. Featured drink recipes can be found at FourRoses.us.

The fully-functional bar was created from one of the last original trees from the farmland of John and Henry Churchill that once stood on the museum’s property. The tree was cut down in 1999 during renovation, but the wood was saved and milled into the planks that make up the body of the bar. Throughout the duration of the Urban Bourbon @ the Kentucky Derby Museum presented by Four Roses exhibit, the bar will be used for bourbon tastings and special events in the exhibit area. The bar will remain in the museum and will continue to be used for tastings and special events after the exhibit closes at the end of the year.

The Derby Café on the first floor of the museum will offer a special bourbon-inspired menu and select tastings of bourbon flights to guests daily during the week from Monday through Friday and on occasional weekends during peak season. The museum gift shop will also have bourbon related items for sale, including a small selection of packaged bourbon. The museum has commissioned a select barrel of Four Roses bourbon and will also sell the limited bottles of the beverage in the gift shop at a price of $59.99.

The museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Admission for adults is $14, Seniors are $13, Ages 13-18 are $11, Ages 5-12 are $6, and kids under 5 are free.
