Village 8 Louisville Exclusives presents 'Bill W.' [Movies]

Ah, the joys of the drink! There is nothing like a rich and complex Belgian ale to delight the taste buds, or the perfect wine paired with a fantastic gourmet meal. Or bourbon – Kentucky makes its living off the stuff, and what wonderful stuff it is! There is a whole science devoted to the art of the cocktail, the blending of diverse ingredients with the necessary backbone of alcoholic spirits, with results so delicious you can't stop drinking them.

Of course, there is a dark side. Abuse of these powers can lead to destruction and despair, broken homes and death. While most people are capable of moderation when it comes to imbibing, many more suffer from addiction – and what a dangerous addiction it is. Inevitably, it not only ruins the sufferer's life, but it can have serious negative impact on the person's family and friends.

Luckily, there is a great help for those who need it and wish to get better: Alcoholics Anonymous, founded by Bill Wilson in 1935. Thus is the subject of the documentary Bill W., playing now at Village 8 as the newest installment in the Louisville Exclusives series.

A sufferer of alcoholism himself, Wilson once met up with a former drinking buddy and found, to his surprise, that his friend had become sober with the help of an evangelical Christian group. It is with this inspiration that Wilson got himself sober and founded A.A. in order to help others. The group started small, but now boasts over two million members. Wilson himself has been listed as one of Time Magazine's 100 most important people of the 20th century.

Bill W. is scheduled to play at Village 8 until this Thursday, September 6, but this is subject for extension. Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and showtimes can be found at the Village 8 website.
