Remember the documentary “Food, Inc.”? Of course you do – how could one forget? It was shocking and revealing enough that I changed the way I buy meat after viewing it. (A quick shout-out to The Root Cellar – fantastic local meat and dairy.) There was plenty to get up in arms about presented in the film, but one example was the almost mafia-like methods of certain seed and feed companies who demanded that you use their genetically altered products – or else – and God help you if they find unpaid-for seed blown on your land by the wind.

The point is that while we know that shady business practices run rampant in the corporate world, it is somehow much more sinister when it comes to something we put in our body. And just like anything shady or sinister, it can make for a fantastic story.

Village 8 Theater presents a limited run of the Belgian film “Bullhead” (original title: “Rundskop”) as part of their Louisville Exclusive series showcasing foreign, art, and limited-release movies. “Bullhead” tells the story of a cattle farmer, a beef trader, a veterinarian, and a shady deal that goes down involving the product. All is complicated with the unexpected death of a local policeman which brings to light certain secrets.

“Bullhead” is the feature film debut of Michael R. Roskam who, previous to this work, had only written and produced short films (including a Hemingway adaptation). His feature-film effort paid off handsomely, gaining him a nomination for Best Foreign Language Films in the most recent Academy Awards (it lost to the Iranian film “A Separation”).

“Bullhead” plays at Village 8 Theater until this upcoming Thursday, March 15. Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. More theater information and showtimes can be found at the Village 8 website.
