Village 8 Louisville Exclusives presents 'Butter' [Movies]
Print this page

Butter is a magical substance. I am an avid cook – I went to culinary school, in fact – so I know a little something about this luscious yellow fat. Ever made your own? It's easy. Last Christmas I presented my family with what was agreed to be the Best Pancake Breakfast Ever: homemade buttermilk pancakes with real

local maple syrup (that crap from the store is flavored corn syrup – read the ingredients, people) and, best of all, freshly churned butter from local cream procured from the Root Cellar. Just put the cream in an automatic mixer and whip it at the highest setting until the solids separate from the liquids. Put the solids in a cheese cloth and squeeze until firm. That's your butter. The liquid? That's your buttermilk. That's what went into the pancakes.

Yes.

I know my way around butter in the kitchen, but I cannot say I have ever sculpted with it. What? Yes, apparently this is a thing – butter sculpting. Thus is the premise behind the aptly-named film

Butter

, which is playing right now at Village 8 Theaters as the newest installment in the Louisville Exclusives series. It tells the story of a small town in Iowa which hosts an annual butter-sculpting contest, and a young orphan discovered to be prodigious at the art. The film is considered by many to be a satire of the 2008 presidential primary – but you'll have to check it out and see for yourself.

Butter

is currently scheduled to run at Village 8 until this Thursday, October 18, but this is subject to extension. Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and showtimes can be found at the Village 8 website.

About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
