Village 8 Louisville Exclusives presents 'Chicken With Plums'

In 2000, Marjane Satrapi wrote the critically acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis – an autobiographical account of her childhood in Iran and growing up during the Iranian Revolution. In 2007, the book was adapted to film, with Satrapi herself directing alongside animator Vincent Paronnaud. The film is a fantastic exploration of the idea of freedom in a totalitarian state, and what happens when a woman goes from an oppressive Middle Eastern society to the very open life afforded by college in France – a place where she could be open with her sexuality, her personality, and her religious views (or lack thereof). Persepolis, in fact, was nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Film (but lost to the, honestly, more deserving Ratatouille).

Now, Satrapi and Paronnaud have returned with a new film: Chicken With Plums, likewise adapted from a graphic novel by Satrapi, although this one is more fictional (and is also not animated). Mathieu Amalric stars as Nasser Ali Khan, a violinist who loses his zest for life after his instrument is destroyed. As he awaits death, he falls into reveries, remembrances, and imaginations, all of which present a portrait of the man's life and passion.

Village 8 Theaters presents Chicken With Plums as the newest installment in the Louisville Exclusives series, bringing foreign, art, and limited-release films to Louisville audiences for a limited run. Chicken With Plums is scheduled to run until Thursday, November 15, but this is subject to extension.

Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and showtimes are available at the Village 8 website.
