Village 8 Louisville Exclusives presents 'Fred Won't Move Out' [Movies]
Print this page

Growing up is hard to do. We can't avoid it (except by dying first, but that's even less fun). Sure, adulthood is great – you make your own rules, and as long as you can manage to get a job you actually like and avoid crushing debt, happiness is certainly possible. But people continue to grow up, and we don't always age like a fine wine – sometimes its more like that bottle of Yellow Tail Merlot which is just going to end up as vinegar (it wasn't that good in the first place anyway), and then your kids tell you it's time to be foisted into a nursing home where strangers insist upon wiping your butt for you. No good (unless the nurse is hot, but face it, you're not getting with her, so it's all just a cruel fantasy).

Filmmaker Richard Ledes recently had to decide what to do with his aging parents. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and so he used the idea as the basis of Fred Won't Move Out

, starring Elliott Gould, Fred Melamed, and Stephanie Roth Haberle. Fred and his wife lived in their home for fifty years and are getting senile in their age, and their son has to make a decision about what is best for them.

Wanting to stick as close to his source material as possible, Ledes and company used his actual parents' recently-vacated home as the shooting location. They shot in sequence and much of the script was improvised, with the actors ad-libbing and Ledes himself writing new material as they went along. The result is a critically-acclaimed organic piece of cinematic truth, largely due to Gould's particularly brilliant performance.

Fred Won't Move Out

is currently playing at Village 8 as part of the Louisville Exclusives series. It is scheduled to run until next Thursday, October 4, but this is subject to extension. Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and showtimes can be found at the Village 8 website.

About Allan Day

There are legitimate theories that the Big Bang originated from the collapse of a black hole in a fourth-dimensional universe. This stuff fascinates me, and I love reading about it. I love reading about science. And about anything, for that matter, provided it's interesting - and everything is potentially interesting, so I'm fascinated by a lot of things. I also read a lot of fiction (Kurt Vonnegut deserves deification) and watch a lot of movies (Charlie Chaplin also deserves deification). I've made a few short films myself. I'm also a writer of everything - I'm close to a Bachelor's in English at IUS. My life consists of reading, writing, bartending, and taking care of my daughter full-time. Life is busy and life is stressful, but that's why there's music and art and other forms of relaxation.
