Village 8 Louisville Exclusives presents 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' [Movies]

Sushi… What other food comes in so many different varieties? It is beautiful to behold – colorful, vibrant, artwork on a platter. I like mine with cream cheese and avocado and eel and roe. Set aside the soy sauce – an expertly prepared roll needs no help. The idea of raw fish may be disconcerting, but once that mental block is put away, one finds that the sweet, succulent flesh of our water-borne friends needs no fire to be enjoyed. My recommendation is to attend Wild Ginger on Monday and Tuesday evenings for bottomless sake (for only a dollar!) while enjoying the meal.

Alas, but I find myself recently sushi-ed out. A certain wife of mine recently discovered the carnal pleasures of these rice-wrapped delicacies and she has been unable to get enough. Unfortunately, my taste buds need a brief respite so that I can yet again enjoy this luscious meal more completely.

Thankfully, Village 8 Theater presents an opportunity to still experience the world of sushi without overloading my taste buds with a short run of the documentary “Jiro Dreams of Sushi.” Jiro Ono is a sushi chef who owns the restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo. It is a tiny operation which can only seat ten people, but Jiro is considered the greatest sushi chef in the world, and his restaurant has earned three Michelin stars. The documentary takes the viewer behind the scenes of this small-yet-impressive sushi operation as Jiro works with his son, who will eventually take over the business.

“Jiro Dreams of Sushi” plays at Village 8 as part of the Louisville Exclusive series until this upcoming Thursday, April 19.

Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Theater information and showtimes can be found at the theater’s website.
