Percussionist J.D. Hall will be hosting a free Hard Rock/Metal drum clinic titled Weapons of Mass Percussion on Saturday, November 12 at Mom's Music, which is located at 1900 Mellwood Ave. The clinic is suited for beginner through intermediate drummers but also includes performance and is interesting to watch for any hard rock fans . It begins at 12:30 p.m and will last about an hour and a half.

J.D Hall currently plays with the metal thrash band Dreadfall and is from Pikeville, Ky. He has seventeen years of experience, although he says he is mostly self taught.

"My dad was a musician and pretty good on the drums," he said. "I guess I picked it up there, and it came pretty naturally. I started seriously playing in the fifth grade, and even played in school bands coming up.  [I love] everything about percussion. It's my life, and it has been for 17 years."

Some of Hall's biggest inspiration has come from Joey Jordison from Slipknot, and Tommy Aldridge, who has played with notables like Ozzy Ozborne, Ted Nugent, and Whitesnake amongst others. Hall has had some notable moments in his own career. He won the state finals of Guitar Center's 2010 Drum off (see video below), and won 2nd place in an international video contest hosted by Red Hot Chili Pepper's Chad Smith (beating out Timothy Diduro of Skid Row/Slaughter). He was also given a featured blog spot on Modern Drummer Magazine's web site.

Hall Will be performing some songs with band mate Daniel Rogers on guitar, solos, and will be demonstrating techniques such as linear drum fills, double bass patterns/exercises, skank & blast beat basics, showmanship, and more. He says that the linear drum fills are probably one of the more difficult things he will be demonstrating.

This free clinic is the first as the store celebrates International Drum Month, which also includes some giant sales like 50% off on all drum heads, hardware and cymbals. Coming up on November 19 is a clinic on how to mic your drums.  Mom's music is a locally owned musician's "one stop shop" for all things audio and musical. They have many types of instruments for sale in addition to offering lessons and renting out rehearsal space.   Check out their web site for more information on sales and free events.

In this video, Hall performs at  Guitar Center's district level of their Drum Off competition after winning the state finals in Lexington.
