This week at the Floyd Theater [Movies]

Let me tell you something: you people are some lucky ducks. Tonight brings the last opportunity to see the last opportunity to see one of the best films of 2011 on a big screen before its DVD release next month.

Tonight the University of Louisville Floyd Theater presents a screening of Pedro Almodovar’s most recent masterpiece, “The Skin I Live In,” which I recently lauded. To recap: this film is about a brilliant doctor (Antonio Banderas) who creates a brand new type of skin impervious to damage. This is just the surface, though: the reality of the situation is so much more dark and disturbing than you can imagine. It plays at 5:00 and then again at 8:00.

“The Skin I Live In” currently ranks #2 among my personal list of the best films of 2011 (the number one spot goes to “The Artist”), and it is my humble opinion that, in this month of Oscars-watching, it got snubbed for most categories in which it would have been eligible. This is Best Picture material, people.

The weekend brings screenings of “The Life Before Her Eyes,” which shows Friday at Saturday night at 5:00 and 8:00. This film tells the story of a woman who survived a Columbine-like event and how it affects her life twenty years later. It is directed by Vadim Perelman (“House of Sand and Fog”) and stars Evan Rachel Wood and Uma Thurman.

There are no screenings on Sunday this weekend. Something about a large dish… a plate or something… a bowl! Some sort of really big Bowl, with Soup in it or something… I don’t know, it’s sports, it doesn’t matter. My alternative suggestion: watch “Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down,” an early Almodovar film with Antonio Banderas.

The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus. Admission is $1.50 for students and $3.00 for the general public. More information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
