Yes, the Fair is in town. Don't get me wrong, I've been known to slam draft beers and ingest giant sausages, then sweat profusely while chicken-dancing under a giant tent on the midway with the best of them, but there is something about the allure that of the KY State Fair that just doesn't do it for me anymore. Maybe the parking, maybe the crowds, maybe the overdose of ugly--tomatoes, lamps (dare I say, humanoids), but the Fair is the last place I want to spend my weekend. If you go, you're more parent than I, but if you concur with my anti-Fair sentiment, try a few of the following alternatives.
Touch a Truck--
If you are feeling guilty about missing out on the agriculture the Fair spotlights each year, I feel your pain, this is by far the best aspect of the annual spectacle. But this Friday, August 27, from 10-noon at the Clarksville Town Hall/Community Center there is a fabulous (and much more manageable) substitute. While you enjoy a giant yard sale, your littles can "touch a truck" to their heart's content. Fire trucks, police cars, school buses, and others will be on display to explore--yeah, it may not be a beautiful heifer or nanny goat, but still…
Crescent Hill Outdoor Movie--
A double feature of "Up" and "Mars Attacks" will play at the Peterson-Dumesnil House on South Peterson this Friday, August 26 at 9:00 p.m. The event is free to the public and concessions are available. I'm almost certain there is beer and wine available--feel the Fair paling in comparison? Bring a blanket and bug spray.
8th Annual Brew at the Zoo--
Why is the investment of $30 to drink beer at the Louisville Zoo better than drinking beer at the Fair? Two reasons: better food and better beer. Live music, local and regional microbreweries, wine, and tastings from area restaurants make this fundraiser for the Zoo a great time. Oh, and no kids. Parents need to be wild animals sometimes, too.
