Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to the Madness of March! The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are your 2012 Sun Belt Champions and will be in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, after defeating the North Texas Mean Green, 74-70.
Improbable. Unfathomable. Amazing.
All words that could be used to describe Western Kentucky's Sun Belt Championship run. They were dead & buried two months ago, until Head Coach Ray Harper took over and brought them from the brink of oblivion.
After a 5-11 start, Ray Harper took over when Ken McDonald was fired February 18th. He then, guided the Hilltoppers to a 11-18 record, winning 4 out of their last 5 to close the season. Once they got to the Sun Belt Tournament, they never looked back, and won 4 games in 4 nights
Western Kentucky becomes the first team with a losing record, to go the NCAA Tournament since 2008, with a record of 15-18. They also join Murray State, Louisville, and Kentucky as teams from the Bluegrass State that will be in the 'Big Dance'. Has there ever been a time that 4 teams for the Bluegrass State have been in the NCAA Tournament together? Truly amazing, Welcome to March folks...
